5. Book Launch, Zion Centre: love poems from suitcase press
______________________________________________________

Dear Poets,

Happy New Year, and an exciting one too!

I am pleased to say we will be launching the Suitcase Book of Love Poems on February 7th at 7pm at Zion Arts Centre, Manchester – just in time for Valentines Day ! I will send more details on venue including directions etc nearer the time.

The host for the evening will be the poet-comedian Julian Daniel. We are launching the spoof guide book he has co-written called, ‘How To Dump Your Girlfriend’ (soon to be followed by its sequel ‘How To Dump Your Boyfriend’) on the same evening, to create an interesting dynamic. Of course, I myself line up unfailingly every time with the romantics. And, while pre-sales of How To Dump Your Girlfriend are exceeding those of The Suitcase Book of Love Poems by three to one- I’m sure we can catch up – love always wins in the end, I say, it’s simply that the cynics always come out of the traps faster!

As well as poetry, there will be song, dance and refreshments on the night. More on that as we firm the programme up.

All good wishes

Pete Kalu

6. Crow of Murders, Contact Theatre: unique event
______________________________________________________

Crow of Murders

Friday 8 February to Saturday 9 February 7.30pm

FREE

Crow of Murders is an exciting, new, community poetry installation from a group of young people who in different ways identify as queer. The show celebrates all kinds of love, written by the cast through workshops led by Contact’s RAW Jam artists Dominic Berry and Lisa B.

Through hip hop to haikus, Crow of Murders asks; what does love mean when you’re queer? What does queer mean when you’re in love? Are the words opposites …or the same?

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT GAIA

Dr James Graham’s Celestial Bed by Gaia Holmes ISBN: 0-9548280-8-9

£7.95, 72pp. Published: 6 April 2006

Gaia Holmes is a Luddenden-born poet whose work digs beneath the surface of mundane, urban life to reveal a remarkable seam of exoticism. Her carnival of characters – bingo callers, burger sellers, critical theorists – are all cast from the least expected places but, rejuvenated by Gaia’s verse, find a new voice and a new ability to captivate. Dr James Graham’s Celestial Bed marks the arrival of yet another great Yorkshire poet.

Somewhere

in the middle of a poem

you draw

the shape of the plough

on the stickleback ridges

of my spine.

There is no first line

to explain the beginning.

- from ‘Constellations’

Gaia is a graduate of Huddersfield University’s English with Creative Writing BA, and has previously made a living as a busker, a cleaner, an oral historian, a lollypop lady , a poet in residence at Bradford Libraries, a free lance writer and Creative writing lecturer.

As well as being a familiar face on the local poetry scene, Gaia Holmes is also known nationally. She has read at literary festivals throughout Britain and beyond. Her poem ‘Claustrophobia’ was highly commended in the ‘best individual poem’ category of the Forward Poetry Prize, 2007 and ‘A homesick truckie In The Algarve’ was the featured poem in Frida Hughes’ weekly literary column in ‘The Times’ (May 2007).

POETS

Robert Hamberger’s poetry has been broadcast on Radio 4 and published in magazines including The Observer, New Statesman, The Spectator, Poetry Review and Gay Times. He has taken part in numerous poetry readings in London and the East Midlands, including the Arts Council-funded regional Inky Fish tour 2006/7. Robert has been awarded a Hawthornden Fellowship and has been shortlisted for a Forward prize. In 2006 he was first prize-winner in Chroma’s first International Queer Writing Competition. He has published six poetry pamphlets, including Heading North (Flarestack, 2007), a sequence about John Clare. His full-length collections are Warpaint Angel (Blackwater, 1997),The Smug Bridegroom (Five Leaves, 2002), which was chosen for the small-press Alternative Generation promotion and Torso, published in summer 2007 by Redbeck Press.

Faith Lawrence is working on a collection of poems for her Creative Writing PhD, and also works as a radio producer for the BBC. These two parts of her life collide pleasurably when she is asked to make radio programmes about poets. She grew up in Hertfordshire but now lives in South Manchester.

James McGrath was born in the countryside of North Staffordshire, an area which, as remembered and imagined from Manchester (where he now lives), inspires many of his poems. He is currently working on his Cultural Studies PhD at Leeds Metropolitan University. James has published reviews in ‘PN Review’ and ‘Estudios Irlandeses: The Spanish Journal of Irish Studies’; he has also contributed a chapter to the book ‘New Perspectives in British Cultural History’.

Catherine Sadler is interested in typography, trains and making books. She is working on the portfolio for her MA at MMU and has reviews published in a-n magazine. She is currently based in Lancaster, where she works as Projects Manager for Litfest.

MUSICIANS

Jane Lawrence has played and composed music for many years. Originally from Manchester, she studied Ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths and learnt tabla in India with a master musician. She runs HoBow, a community fiddle group in Lancaster and plays with Tabuka and Chouchenn, with whom she has recorded two CDs. When not playing her fiddle or being a busy mother, she loves swimming.

Hugh Tuffen is a classically-trained cellist who has recently discovered the rich world of folk music. His performing experience includes orchestras, chamber groups and folk bands at venues ranging from concert halls to chaotic poetry jams. Together with Jane he is a member of “Balkanic Eruption”, a seven-piece Balkan and Klezmer band based in Lancaster, where he works as a
volcanologist.

Dancehouse Nick here, taking this opportunity to say “Thank you!” to all of you who supported our evening classes last year.. I hope you have had as much fun as we have!

Starting January 7th 2008!….

Monday evening now sees the addition of Pete’s Tai Chi Ch’uan class.

For those unaware, Tai Chi Ch’uan is an ancient Chinese martial art which is also practiced for health, relaxation and meditation.

A series of postures becomes a continuous flowing series of slow, graceful movements, highly effective as an exercise system, practiced and enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

In the 21st century, Tai Chi Ch’uan has proved itself to be a practical tool for modern life, helping to improve posture, increase energy levels and create a clear, calm mind.

By learning and practising a few simple postures for a few minutes every day, this ancient Chinese system easily integrates into your life, benefiting you physically, mentally, emotionally and ultimately, spiritually.

Pete will be taking the class from 7pm till 9pm.

Danny’s Tuesday’s Capoeira class has taken off very well with an excellent group of players! Capoeira is a playful non contact acrobatic dance fight, performed to live music and song. and seen as a brazilian martial art.

Capoeira training developes fitness, strength, fexibility, balance and co-ordination and is great fun!

Another class that is attracting alot of interest and support, and one to have a go at if you’ve not done so already. With such a rich cultural heritage, it really is an exciting and vibrant form of physical exercise.

Company Fierce Dance Academy is going from strength to strength, scoring some fine successes this year.

Contact 07957 249 770 for further details

AND….

BIG DANCE…

This free and easy, wacky approach to dance doesn’t require any techniques or dance experience. If weight, breathlessness or a bad back or joint problems have inhibited you from dancing in the past, but you’ve always wanted to ‘dance as if no-one was watching’ this is the class for you!

You will try out many dance styles, from seated line dancing to samba, from circle dancing to tap, belly danceing to ballet. using props and a wide range of music from jazz to classical to irish jigs to african drums. You can even bring your own favorite music!

I want to remember the glue
that sticks me to the book
keeps me in a trance till the
very end
the glue that sticks us together
when we could not be together

I want to remember the dripping rain
on my beautifully blank mind
a fresh canvas for the rain
to tap its rhythms on
and the way it washes away my
fear and anger

I want to remember the glue
that sticks the raindrops
on my skin, and leaves me wet
the glue that sticks us together
when we could not be together

I want to remember fast cars
and the feeling I get when I
feel its leather seats with a finger
and smell the new car smell I love.
I want to remember being faster than nature
inside my car

I want to remember the glue that
sticks the leather to the seats
and me to the car.
the glue that sticks us together
when we could not be together

I want to remember scissors
cutting, shredding, tearing scissors
separating things that were once
bonded
I want to remember the glue that
keeps my love for art with me
sticking things together
that could not be together

I want to remember wool
soft wool, pretty wool, itchy wool, different
wool, wool to look at wool to use in my hair
everywhere

I want to remember the glue
that sticks me to all these things
things that could not be together before
together now.

project news

Cumbria and Lancashire Initiative

The overall aim of the project is to stimulate activity in performance poetry in Cumbria and Lancashire. Apples & Snakes has been working in partnership with The Brewery Arts Centre, Wild Women Press, Speakeasy in Carlisle, Word Market, Forum 28, LiveAmp, The Ashton Group and Furness College.

So far we have run poetry slams, workshops, cabaret events, community celebrations, showcase events and showings of new work. We have developed opportunities for spoken word artists to perform both within and outside the region. We have raised the expectation of audiences and poets within the region and have developed new programming activity for spoken word at Forum 28.

This year we plan to consolidate our work by hosting Escape Masterclasses, networking events, professional development opportunities, new performance events and mentoring for promoters.

Greetings!

Welcome to the MLF newsletter, which we hope will make it easier for you to manage the way you receive information about our events by email or post.

A Happy New Year to you all.

Now that the festive season is over and the Christmas decorations are packed away for another year, we are sure that you will be on the lookout for other exciting happenings, cultural or otherwise, to occupy your time.
Our friends at The Lowry, Salford, would like us to let you know about two of their forthcoming shows presenting the work of literary geniuses Kafka and Pushkin….and to tempt you even further, anyone who books for one of the following shows and quotes ‘Manchester Literature Festival’ will receive £2 off all ticket prices!

A Lyric Hammersmith and Vesturport Theatre Production…

METAMORPHOSIS by Franz Kafka
Thu 14 – Sat 16 Feb 08
Eves 8pm, Sat Mat 3pm
Tickets: £14-£18 (Concessions £2 off)

One of 2006’s hottest shows, the darkly comic and profoundly moving Metamorphosis comes to the Lowry.
Franz Kafka’s eerie and fantastical story sees the unremarkable life of the Samsas turned upside down when their son, Gregor, emerges one morning inexplicably transformed into a monstrous insect. As revulsion turns to resentment, strange things start to happen to the Samsa family.
This hugely acclaimed and imaginative production combines jaw-dropping aerial physicality, a gravity-defying split-level set and a mesmerising score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Most suitable for ages 12+

‘A triumph…It uses physical ingenuity to get to the tragic heart of Kafka’s fable.’
***** The Guardian

………………………

A Chekhov International Festival Production in association with Cheek by Jowl…

BORIS GODUNOV
by Alexander Pushkin

Tue 29 April – Sat 3 May
Eves 7pm
Tickets £18 & £20 (Concessions £2 off)

Cheek by Jowl’s stellar Russian ensemble returns to The Lowry following their triumphant performance of Twelth Night (M.E.N. Theatre Award Nominee for Best International Play) in 2006.
Pushkin’s lyrical masterpiece is a gripping expose of the seductive appeal of power and the terrible price that must be paid for it. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Histories, money, corruption, sex and blood thicken this sinuous and radical play.
Formed in 2001 by Cheek by Jowl Artistic Directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, Cheek by Jowl’s Russian ensemble has toured the world from Buenos Aires to Sydney, from Stratford-upon-Avon to Hong Kong, winning numerous awards and adulation from audiences and critics alike.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see this epic Russian classic performed by some of Russia’s greatest actors.

Tremendous and stirring…a splendid, bursting, mighty themed epic.’ The Indpendent

To book tickets for either of these events please call the Lowry Box Office on 0870 787 5798.
