She won the 2004 Glastonbury Festival Poetry Slam and is the author of the book ‘Cheesegrater Leg-Iron Lion’.
Was once described as the love child of Eddie Izzard and Pam Ayres.

5. Book Launch, Zion Centre: love poems from suitcase press

Dear Poets,

Happy New Year, and an exciting one too!

I am pleased to say we will be launching the Suitcase Book of Love Poems on February 7^th at 7pm at Zion Arts Centre, Manchester – just in time for Valentines Day ! I will send more details on venue including directions etc nearer the time.

The host for the evening will be the poet-comedian Julian Daniel. We are launching the spoof guide book he has co-written called, ‘How To Dump Your Girlfriend’ (soon to be followed by its sequel ‘How To Dump Your Boyfriend’) on the same evening, to create an interesting dynamic. Of course, I myself line up unfailingly every time with the romantics. And, while pre-sales of How To Dump Your Girlfriend are exceeding those of The Suitcase Book of Love Poems by three to one- I’m sure we can catch up – love always wins in the end, I say, it’s simply that the cynics always come out of the traps faster!

As well as poetry, there will be song, dance and refreshments on the night. More on that as we firm the programme up.

As well as being a familiar face on the local poetry scene, Gaia Holmes is also known nationally. She has read at literary festivals throughout Britain and beyond. Her poem ‘Claustrophobia’ was highly commended in the ‘best individual poem’ category of the Forward Poetry Prize, 2007 and ‘A homesick truckie In The Algarve’ was the featured poem in Frida Hughes’ weekly literary column in ‘The Times’ (May 2007).

Robert Hamberger’s poetry has been broadcast on Radio 4 and published in magazines including The Observer, New Statesman, The Spectator, Poetry Review and Gay Times. He has taken part in numerous poetry readings in London and the East Midlands, including the Arts Council-funded regional Inky Fish tour 2006/7. Robert has been awarded a Hawthornden Fellowship and has been shortlisted for a Forward prize. In 2006 he was first prize-winner in Chroma’s first International Queer Writing Competition. He has published six poetry pamphlets, including Heading North (Flarestack, 2007), a sequence about John Clare. His full-length collections are Warpaint Angel (Blackwater, 1997),The Smug Bridegroom (Five Leaves, 2002), which was chosen for the small-press Alternative Generation promotion and Torso, published in summer 2007 by Redbeck Press.

Faith Lawrence is working on a collection of poems for her Creative Writing PhD, and also works as a radio producer for the BBC. These two parts of her life collide pleasurably when she is asked to make radio programmes about poets. She grew up in Hertfordshire but now lives in South Manchester.

James McGrath was born in the countryside of North Staffordshire, an area which, as remembered and imagined from Manchester (where he now lives), inspires many of his poems. He is currently working on his Cultural Studies PhD at Leeds Metropolitan University. James has published reviews in ‘PN Review’ and ‘Estudios Irlandeses: The Spanish Journal of Irish Studies’; he has also contributed a chapter to the book ‘New Perspectives in British Cultural History’.

Catherine Sadler is interested in typography, trains and making books. She is working on the portfolio for her MA at MMU and has reviews published in a-n magazine. She is currently based in Lancaster, where she works as Projects Manager for Litfest.

MUSICIANS

Jane Lawrence has played and composed music for many years. Originally from Manchester, she studied Ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths and learnt tabla in India with a master musician. She runs HoBow, a community fiddle group in Lancaster and plays with Tabuka and Chouchenn, with whom she has recorded two CDs. When not playing her fiddle or being a busy mother, she loves swimming.

Hugh Tuffen is a classically-trained cellist who has recently discovered the rich world of folk music. His performing experience includes orchestras, chamber groups and folk bands at venues ranging from concert halls to chaotic poetry jams. Together with Jane he is a member of “Balkanic Eruption”, a seven-piece Balkan and Klezmer band based in Lancaster, where he works as a
volcanologist.

LITERATURE LIVE EVENTS

Our final Literature Live events of 2007 saw the writer and journalist Geoff Dyer appear at the Martin Harris Centre on 10 December, and internationally acclaimed poet Paul Muldoon at the John Rylands Library on Deansgate on the 13th.

Dyer, who has published three novels as well as six works of non-fiction and an array of journalism, read a short but suspenseful account of a New Mexico car journey recently published in the new writing magazine Granta. He then entered into an entertaining discussion with the audience; to find out more please visit www.manchester.ac.uk/arts/newwriting/news/GeoffDyer/ .

Muldoon was in Manchester to give the fifth Rylands Poetry Reading, a partnership event run by the John Rylands Library and the Centre. Following an inspirational and invigorating discussion with the Centre’s graduate students on the art of writing poems, he delighted a packed reading room with an engaging performance which included readings from his most recent collection (‘Horse Latitudes’).

Next Season

Our forthcoming Literature Live season begins on 11 February with readings by novelist Jonathan Trigell, whose ‘Boy A’ was recently made into a Channel 4 film, and fiction-writer Clare Wigfall. Both writers are alumni of our MA in Creative Writing.

Monday evening now sees the addition of Pete’s Tai Chi Ch’uan class.

For those unaware, Tai Chi Ch’uan is an ancient Chinese martial art which is also practiced for health, relaxation and meditation.

A series of postures becomes a continuous flowing series of slow, graceful movements, highly effective as an exercise system, practiced and enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

In the 21st century, Tai Chi Ch’uan has proved itself to be a practical tool for modern life, helping to improve posture, increase energy levels and create a clear, calm mind.

By learning and practising a few simple postures for a few minutes every day, this ancient Chinese system easily integrates into your life, benefiting you physically, mentally, emotionally and ultimately, spiritually.

Danny’s Tuesday’s Capoeira class has taken off very well with an excellent group of players! Capoeira is a playful non contact acrobatic dance fight, performed to live music and song. and seen as a brazilian martial art.

Capoeira training developes fitness, strength, fexibility, balance and co-ordination and is great fun!

Another class that is attracting alot of interest and support, and one to have a go at if you’ve not done so already. With such a rich cultural heritage, it really is an exciting and vibrant form of physical exercise.

‘Dream of an African Child’ by Robin Graham, directed by Toria Banks
Greenhouse Northwest and The Ugly Tree are looking for 4 black actors (2m 2f)
for a tour in the Northwest region. The play is set in rural Ghana, and tells
the story of a sixteen year old boy’s return to confront his family who sold
him eight years before. The tour will include schools performances for 15 and
16 year olds, as well as public performances at venues including the Bolton
Octagon and Manchester Museum.
Rehearsals start, in central Manchester, on Monday 18th February. The show has
a running time of approximately 40 minutes, and will be rehearsed over
ten days. The show opens on Thursday 28th, at the Bolton Octagon, and tour
dates run until Wednesday 19th March. The fee for the rehearsal and performance
period (4 weeks and 2 days) is �1100. Travel to performance venues (but not to
rehearsals) will be paid for by the company, and a daily payment will be made
whenever there are two performances on a single day.
We cannot pay for accommodation, so a Manchester base is an obvious advantage.
However, we may be able to accommodate one or two performers in our own homes,
so please get in touch if that may be a help. Please note that an accurate West
African accent (or at very least, a proven ear for accents) is an absolute
necessity. Musical skills are an advantage but not essential.
We are looking to cast the following:
Peter (16) – the youngest son in a large family, Peter was sold at eight
years old to work for a fisherman on the lake upriver. He returns to confront
his parents. Please note we are looking for a trained, professional actor with
a young playing age.
Mary (18)- Peter’s sister. Mary sells fish on the river ferry, and does what
her father tells her. It was because of what Mary told her parents about the
young Peter’s behaviour that he was sold. Please note we are looking for a
trained, professional actor with a young playing age.
Mother (mid-late 40s) – Works hard, selling fish at market. Is excited when
Peter comes home, and hopes that the past can be forgotten.
Father (50s) – Cannot admit to any past mistakes, or that Peter was not being
justly punished. Is broken by the strength of his son’s anger.
The play was written by Robin Graham of Greenhouse Northwest, after spending a
lot of time in Ghana. It is a straightforward, strongly told family drama, and
is not TIE in style. It should be robust, and realistic and powerful and will
repay careful rehearsal. If you are interested in auditioning please send a

Auditions will be held in Manchester, on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th January.

The Drum Arts Centre is seeking new productions and performances for its Summer (May / June / July) and Autumn (September / October / November / December) 2008 seasons, We would be interested in hearing from artists, promoters, production companies, musicians and performers, who have product or tours that they would like to submit for consideration for this period.

Please note: The Drum is dedicated to developing and promoting contemporary art and culture of British African, Asian and Caribbean communities. The Drum’s mission is to lead and facilitate the development, celebration, performance and exhibition of the diversity of Black arts and cultures for the benefit of all.

All submissions/proposals need to be received by Friday 18^th January 2008 to be considered for summer season. Proposals must include the following supporting information:

· Name, contact details of company or artist(s)

· Biographic details of artist(s) and company

· Synopsis of the piece / gig

· Running Time

· High quality colour and, if available, black + white images (min 300 dpi at 10cm square, ideally a file size of 1MB or over. )

The Complete Works

A national two year development programme for advanced Black and Asian poets

Are you a Black or Asian poet at the stage where you are committed to producing your first full-length collection?
Would you benefit from a tailored programme of support and career development?

For two years you will have an individually assigned poet-mentor offering you intensive critical feedback on your writing. You will also have access to a professional development programme including seven full days of seminars, critical reading sessions, meet-the-editor events and career support and advice.

Peer support throughout the project will be encouraged and supported.
Each year will feature a residential week of writing at Arvon for the group.

The Complete Works will culminate in a final anthology and showcase event.

POETRY KIT WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL OUR READERS A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE BEST FOR 2008

To celebrate Liverpool as European Capital of Culture in 2008

THE POETRY KIT – Poetry Competition.

This is a poetry competition with a difference. First of all, the prize is publication on the front page of Poetry Kit where it will be seen by the 10 thousand visitors we have each day, ther ewill also be a few other goodies to show our thanks, but no cash prize.. Secondly although there is no set fee to enter, there is a catch;

Over the next two years the Liverpool Methodist Youth Exchange programme will be organising an exchange of young people with the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands in the West Indies. This is an ideal opportunity for a group of young people to learn about each others cultures and to be involved in community projects. In 2008 a group from Merseyside will be spending a month in the West Indies living with families and working on projects. In 2009 the same young people will host a visit to Merseyside of a group from the West Indies. To do this we need to raise a considerable amount of money. So the entry fee is a donation of money to the “Liverpool Methodist Youth Exchange”. It can be as little or as much as you want or can afford.

Entries to our competition should be accompanied by a cheque made payable to “Liverpool Methodist Youth Exchange” and we will pass it on to them. Alternatively you can send a donation directly to them at T.Halls, Liverpool Methodist Youth Exchange, 72 Vaughan Road, Wallasey, Merseyside, CH45 1LP. If you wish to enter by email you can, to info@poetrykit.org but let us know that you have made a donation to the Exchange. We are also looking for prizes that you may like to donate, books CD’s, DVD’s, anything really, and we will be giving those as prizes in this and other competitions and also using them later in the year for a poetry sale, raffle or lucky dip, again to raise money for the Exchange. So please help.

Now the competition; There will be six competitions over the year, each one of two months duration. Anyone making a donation will be eligible to enter each subsequent competition, although you can make a donations each time you enter or even if you don’t. At the end of twelve months all of the winners and runners up will be considered for a special edition of our on-line magazine, Transparent Words.

Poems can be of any length or subject. The closing date for the competition is 31st January 2008. When the winner will be chosen and put onto the front page of Poetry Kit.

THE TED SLADE AWARD

This years recipient of the Ted Slade award is Connie Pickard, who has organised events at Morden Tower in Newcastle since 1964. You can see the excellent site for Morden Tower and read something of the long history of the venue at http://www.mordentower.org/

Connie has been informed today so please feel free to contact her if you would like to pass on your congrats. I am also pleased to say that I have reached an arrangement with the University of Liverpool to display the glass trophy that we have obtained and which, when the new plinth for it is ready, will carry the names of recipients of the award.

Each year at Poetry Kit we have a nomination and voting process to make a number of awards. The most important one as far as we are concerned is to make a good choice for the Ted Slade Award. Ted Slade was the founder of the Poetry Kit and the award is a recognition of others who like him gave freely of their time and energy in order to help preserve a platform for poetry at the grass roots in the UK or to develop an audience for it.

I am incredibly honoured to tell you that the award this year has been awarded to Connie Pickard for her tireless work in providing a platform for poetry.

CALLING ALL MERSEYSIDE POETS

Emma Jackson at The Merseyside and Wirral Poetry Project is looking for North West Poets, particularly those with strong links to Liverpool, either through residence, family or who regularly perform in the City. She is building a web site where she hopes to record all the poets who are writing in the area as Liverpool becomes European Capital of Culture. The website will list also list events, venues and websites which will give an overall picture of the strength of poetry in Liverpool in 2008

Ceridwen is all about inspiration. Here you will enjoy fabulous food, cheerful companionship, spectacular scenery, and workshops that entertain, engage and exhilarate – giving you the space to create. Invention. Expression. Freedom.

Whether your interest is in poetry, prose or performance, each course will provide opportunities for you to explore or expand your writing skills. Liven up lines, pep up paragraphs, stanza and deliver. Take your pick from a variety of exercises, discussions, readings, individual tutorials, group sessions, games, walks… and other adventures to stretch both brain and body!

All courses will be delivered by writers Marcus Moore and Sara-Jane Arbury, who work together as Spiel Unlimited. Marcus has written Call My Bluff scripts for the BBC, had poems published by Macmillan, and run countless workshops in schools, libraries and prisons. Sara-Jane directs the voices off programme for Cheltenham Literature Festival, has toured nationally as a performer in the Bloodaxe production of Staying Alive, and was recently Herefordshire’s first writer-in-residence.

Issue Four of The Mental Virus is ready and waiting to be spread throughout the synapses and viaducts of your mind. And for one night only ‘The People Under The Stairs’ event will be taking place upstairs on the top floor to fully launch the new issue.

On Saturday 15th December we have a great line up of poets and musicians. From the scat/rap poetry of Scot Devon to the ‘young heir of John Cooper Clarke’ Cayn White. Also on the bill, Gordon Zola, the self-styled whitest man of rap, who will be bringing some musical accompaniment to his comic rhymes. We also have the talented blues guitarist John Fairhurst, who has his debut album ‘Joys of Spring’ out in January. Expect exploding blues, baroque folk and chugging Indian ragas.

Who else do we have? Oh yes, the great Paul Bibby will be making a special solo appearance. Those who missed him at the last magazine launch missed a great performance of technical wizardry culminating in a live symphonic classical piece. This time he has an up-beat special planned with his weapon of choice the guitar.

Headlining the night we have the Beefheart and Howlin’ Wolf inspired demon blues of The Cubical, kindly booked by Lupine.

As always with Mental Virus launch nights, there will be other things going on. But this time I think we’ll leave it as a surprise. [In the past we’ve had themes of cannibalism, surrealism, sound installations and art exhibitions; what will this night hold??]

This afternoon’s performance marks the beginning of the Poet’s and Players new programme.  We are very fortunate to have Jeffrey Wainwright leading the programme.  As a Professor in the English Depart of MMU and a tutor in The Writing School, Jeffrey has encouraged the development of new writing in Manchester for many years.  He has translated French drama for the Royal Shakespeare Company and BBC Radio and is a theatre critic for the Independent. Carcanet published his first book of poems, Heart’s Desire (1978), and his Selected Poems (1985).  His other Carcanet titles are: The Red-Headed Pupil and Out of the Air. He is a passionate reader of his own work.
Chris Davies is well known to Poets and Players audiences for his versitility and originality.  Most of his composing is commissioned in conjunction with theatre and dance performances.
Loz Kaye is a freelance musician, composer, musical director and teacher. He works mostly in theatre, in particular with Horse + Bamboo, Trestle and Danish Thalias Tjenere. He is currently teaching at Salford University.

Maths isn’t my strong point, as my bank manager knows. I’m good at magic though. Magic underwear. When I take my bra off, my boobs disappear. They fall like silicon blancmanges scoring tries on the bedroom floor. We could play catch with them. The jellyfish that lurk in my lingerie drawer. They enhance what nature didn’t. Just don’t let the dog play with them. She’s punctured one already. Which means I have a spare. A pink igloo that never melts. It stays in the box, lopsided and alone. Like me, now he’s gone. When I wriggle out of my miracle pants, you get a bonus. A third extra – of me. Or rather, my bum. Which looks smaller in them, but boy does it spread once it’s free again. He used to like it though; told me not to hide it. He accepted me. He’d even kiss my Buddha belly. My thread veins draw a roadmap of Britain on my atlas skin. I don’t need Sat Nav. And in winter, I hesitate to depilate. Spiders leg hairs keep mine warm. He used to joke, ‘Would you like them plaited or permed?’ Now he’s gone. And here I am, Speed dating. My friends said, ‘Don’t mention the widow thing.’ But death demands honesty. So that’s my truth. As you can see from our gig guide there are poetry parties all around the country from Mudfog
Christmas party in the North East to a rather wonderful evening in London on the 17th celebrating 25
years of Apples and Snakes with John Hegley and Michael Rosen amongst a galaxy of stars on show.
Whilst in the North West there are parties all over the place including one of our own in Bolton on the
16^th December and a fantastic winter slam in Wigan on 13th.

REMEMBER NOVEMBER

‘Dull November brings the blast, then the leaves are whirling fast…’ an old adage that appropriately describes Spiel Unlimited’s work this month. After a period of restful calm and general inactivity, we found ourselves whirling over to Oxford on Tuesday 20th to run balloon-head and word-wig workshops with exuberant Year 3 pupils at Rose Hill Primary School. It was a great day, full of creativity, enthusiasm and only one or two popped balloons. The children put in a tremendous amount of work and we all had a blast. Thanks to Rupert Rowbotham, the Education Officer at the Playhouse Theatre, Oxford, for organising such an enjoyable day for us.

Later that same week on Friday 23rd November, we pitched up at Solihull Arts Complex for the 6th Annual Solihull Poetry Slam & Quiz. Always a favourite gig in our calendar, this year was no exception. A plethora of wordsters paraded their verse in front of a supportive audience, until a nail-biting final saw the supersonic heady-iambics of Sonia Hendy-Isaac take on the cathartic lines of slam newcomer Catho Lyric. Sonia clinched victory by a mere 5 points and went off with a stack of prizes, as did the winning team in the Quick Quip Quiz served up to the audience in between the slam rounds. Big thanks to the staff at Solihull Arts Complex and Nickie Thomas in particular for her dedicated organisation and fabulous prizes.

ROOM TO WRITE

Most of you should have received an email a few days ago with details of ‘Room To Write’, an exciting new SU venture 2008. This is essentially a series of residential writing weekends in the spectacular location of The Ceridwen Centre in Carmarthenshire. The workshops we deliver are designed to free up the writer in you and provide a valuable and inspiring space to create. There are still some places available for people wanting to take part in the Big Bilston Love Slam on Saturday 9th February at the Imperial Banqueting Suite, Bilston, Wolverhampton.
